Harvard Community Health Plan

Harvard Community Health Plan (HCHP) was a pioneering non-profit health maintenance organization (HMO) founded in 1969 by Robert Ebert, then Dean of Harvard Medical School. It was established as one of the first university-sponsored health plans in the United States, aiming to provide comprehensive, prepaid medical care through an integrated delivery system. The organization operated its own health centers and maintained a network of affiliated hospitals and physicians throughout Massachusetts. In 1995, HCHP merged with Pilgrim Health Care to form Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, creating the largest health insurer in New England at the time. Today, its legacy continues through Point32Health, the parent company formed by the subsequent merger of Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts Health Plan.
