Medco Health Solutions was a leading American pharmacy benefit management (PBM) company that provided comprehensive pharmacy services to private and public employers, health plans, and government agencies. The company was a pioneer in the use of clinical research and personalized medicine, notably establishing the Medco Research Institute to study the impact of genetics on drug response. Medco managed prescription drug programs for millions of members and operated one of the world's largest mail-order pharmacy operations. In 2012, the company was acquired by Express Scripts in a landmark $29 billion deal, creating the largest PBM in the United States at the time.
