HepaLife BioSystems was a biotechnology company dedicated to the development of cell-based therapies and medical devices for the treatment of liver disease. Its flagship product, the HepaDrive, was a bio-artificial liver (BAL) system intended to provide extracorporeal support for patients suffering from acute liver failure. The technology utilized the proprietary HepaRG cell line, which mimics the metabolic functions of primary human hepatocytes. Although the company made progress in clinical development, it transitioned its business model and merged with Alliqua in 2010. Following the merger, the entity shifted its focus toward advanced wound care and drug delivery technologies.
