Hepix was a Belgian biotechnology company focused on the development of innovative cell therapies for the treatment of severe liver diseases. Spun out from the University of Louvain (UCLouvain), the company specialized in the isolation and expansion of human liver-derived progenitor cells. Its core technology aimed to provide an alternative to liver transplantation by using these progenitor cells to restore liver function in patients with metabolic disorders or acute liver failure. Hepix was acquired early in its development by Promethera Biosciences, which was founded specifically to commercialize the Hepix technology. The company's research laid the groundwork for several clinical-stage programs in the field of regenerative medicine for the liver.
