Company intelligence / Profile preview
Hoechst Celanese was a prominent American chemical and life sciences company formed in 1987 following the acquisition of Celanese Corporation by the German conglomerate Hoechst AG. Headquartered in Somerville, New Jersey, the company operated as the North American arm of Hoechst, managing a diverse portfolio that included specialty chemicals, advanced fibers, and significant pharmaceutical interests. Its healthcare division contributed to the development and commercialization of widely used treatments in cardiovascular health and metabolism, such as the diuretic Lasix and the diabetes medication Daonil. In 1999, the merger of Hoechst AG and Rhône-Poulenc to form Aventis led to the restructuring of the company, with its pharmaceutical assets integrated into Aventis (now Sanofi) and its chemical businesses spun off as an independent Celanese AG. Today, Hoechst Celanese is recognized as a pivotal historical entity that bridged the gap between traditional industrial chemistry and modern biotechnology.
