Holland Sweetener Company

Holland Sweetener Company was a prominent joint venture between the Dutch life sciences and materials company DSM and the Japanese chemical firm Tosoh Corporation. Established in 1985, the company specialized in the large-scale production and global marketing of aspartame, a high-intensity artificial sweetener. It was a primary competitor to the NutraSweet brand and was instrumental in breaking the market monopoly following the expiration of key patents. The company developed innovative products such as Twinsweet, a unique sweetener salt combining aspartame and acesulfame. However, due to intense global price competition and significant overcapacity in the aspartame market, the company ceased all operations and exited the business in 2006.
