Hortapharm is a pioneering Dutch biotechnology company focused on the research and genetic development of cannabis for pharmaceutical use. Founded in the early 1990s by David Watson and Robert Clarke, the company is credited with creating one of the most comprehensive and chemically diverse cannabis genetic libraries in the world. The company's primary business model involved the selective breeding of cannabis strains to produce consistent, standardized ratios of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. Hortapharm's most significant contribution to the life sciences industry was its long-term collaboration with GW Pharmaceuticals, which utilized Hortapharm's proprietary genetics to develop the landmark drugs Sativex and Epidiolex.
