Hospice Africa Uganda

Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a non-profit healthcare organization and a pioneer in palliative care within sub-Saharan Africa. Founded in 1993 by Dr. Anne Merriman, the organization developed the 'Uganda Model' of palliative care, which focuses on home-based care and the integration of services into national health systems. A distinctive feature of HAU is its in-house production of affordable oral liquid morphine, which is distributed throughout Uganda to manage severe pain in patients with cancer and HIV/AIDS. Beyond clinical services, HAU operates the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA), providing specialized training and degree programs for healthcare professionals across the continent. The organization plays a critical role in advocacy, policy development, and the expansion of palliative care access in resource-limited settings.
