Founded in 1996, the company is a pioneer in women's health, having launched the first emergency contraceptive in Europe and later developing the first over-the-counter contraceptive pill in the UK. Its portfolio includes market-leading brands such as EllaOne, Hana, and Compeed, as well as a specialized range of treatments for rare endocrine conditions. In 2022, HRA Pharma was acquired by Perrigo for approximately $2.1 billion to strengthen its global self-care business, while its rare disease division was subsequently acquired by Esteve in 2024.
