Hyland Laboratories

Hyland Laboratories was a pioneering biotechnology company specializing in the development and manufacture of blood-derived products and diagnostic reagents. Founded in 1940, the company became a leader in plasma fractionation, producing essential therapies such as albumin and anti-hemophilic factor for the treatment of hemophilia. Hyland was acquired by Baxter International in 1952, where it served as the foundation for Baxter's BioScience division. Its legacy continues through the evolution of its business units into Baxalta, Shire, and eventually Takeda. The company is credited with significant advancements in blood safety and the commercialization of life-saving biologics. It was the first commercial laboratory to receive a license from the National Institutes of Health for the production of human blood fractions.
