Hyperion Therapeutics was a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of therapies for orphan diseases, specifically those in the field of hepatology and metabolic disorders. The company's flagship product, Ravicti (glycerol phenylbutyrate), was approved by the FDA in 2013 for the chronic management of urea cycle disorders (UCD) in patients aged two years and older. Hyperion also marketed Buphenyl (sodium phenylbutyrate) and was investigating the use of its nitrogen-binding technology for hepatic encephalopathy. In May 2015, Hyperion was acquired by Horizon Pharma for approximately $1.1 billion, integrating its rare disease portfolio into Horizon's business. The company's legacy continues through its products, which are now part of the Amgen portfolio following Amgen's acquisition of Horizon.
