Overview
I.G. Farben was a massive German chemical and pharmaceutical conglomerate formed in 1925 through the merger of industry leaders such as Bayer, BASF, and Hoechst. During its existence, it was the world's largest chemical company and a pioneer in the development of synthetic materials and life-saving pharmaceuticals, including the first sulfonamide antibiotic, Prontosil. The company's history is deeply intertwined with the Third Reich, leading to its dissolution by the Allied powers after World War II due to war crimes and involvement in the Holocaust. Its assets were eventually split into successor companies that include modern-day giants like Bayer, BASF, and Sanofi. The company's scientific legacy includes multiple Nobel Prizes for its researchers, despite its dark political history.
