ICI Americas

ICI Americas was the United States operating subsidiary of the British industrial giant Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). The company played a pivotal role in the pharmaceutical industry during the 20th century, leading the development and commercialization of essential medicines including beta-blockers like propranolol and the landmark oncology drug tamoxifen. In 1993, ICI demerged its bioscience divisions—comprising pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and specialties—into a new independent company called Zeneca. This entity later merged with the Swedish firm Astra AB in 1999 to form AstraZeneca, effectively making ICI Americas a direct ancestor of the modern pharmaceutical leader. Beyond pharmaceuticals, the company was also involved in specialty chemicals and materials, though its life science legacy remains its most significant contribution to healthcare.
