IDEC Pharmaceuticals was a pioneering biotechnology company primarily focused on the development of targeted therapies for oncology and autoimmune diseases. The company is most famous for co-developing Rituxan (rituximab), the first monoclonal antibody approved by the FDA for the treatment of cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Beyond Rituxan, IDEC developed Zevalin, the first radioimmunotherapy for cancer. In 2003, the company merged with Biogen in a multi-billion dollar deal to form Biogen IDEC, which later transitioned to the name Biogen. The legacy of IDEC remains central to the modern biologics landscape, particularly in the field of B-cell mediated diseases.
