Company intelligence / Profile preview
IGEN International was a pioneering biotechnology company that developed and commercialized the proprietary ORIGEN electrochemiluminescence (ECL) technology. This platform became a cornerstone of modern clinical diagnostics, enabling the high-sensitivity detection of pathogens, hormones, and tumor markers in centralized laboratory settings. The technology was most famously utilized in Roche's Elecsys product line, which became a global market leader in immunoassay testing. Following a high-profile legal battle over licensing rights and royalties, Roche acquired IGEN in 2004 for approximately $1.4 billion to secure perpetual rights to the ECL technology. The company's non-diagnostic assets were subsequently spun off into BioVeris Corporation, which was later also acquired by Roche.
