Imalux

Imalux Corporation was a medical device company that pioneered the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for real-time, point-of-care tissue imaging. Its flagship product, the Niris Imaging System, was the first OCT system to receive FDA clearance for medical diagnostics, designed to provide high-resolution cross-sectional views of tissue microstructure. The technology was primarily used as an "optical biopsy" tool in urology and gynecology to help physicians identify cancerous and precancerous lesions without immediate invasive sampling. Based in Cleveland, Ohio, the company's core technology was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Although the system achieved commercial status and was used in various clinical settings, the company eventually ceased operations in the early 2010s.
