Immunetech Pharmaceuticals

Immunetech Pharmaceuticals was a San Diego-based biotechnology company founded in 1981 by researchers from the University of California, San Diego. The company specialized in the development of genetically engineered peptide compounds designed to modulate the human immune system, with a primary focus on allergy and autoimmune diseases. Its lead product candidate, HEPP (an IgE pentapeptide), reached Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of hay fever and conjunctivitis but was ultimately rejected by the FDA. Following this setback, the company executed a significant strategic pivot in 1989 by acquiring Dura Pharmaceuticals and subsequently adopting the Dura name in 1991. This transition shifted the company's focus toward respiratory and infectious disease products, eventually leading to its acquisition by Elan Corporation for $1.8 billion in 2000.
