Impella CardioSystems is a pioneering medical technology company that developed the Impella heart pump, recognized as the world's smallest heart pump. Founded in Aachen, Germany, the company specialized in catheter-based microaxial blood pumps designed to provide temporary circulatory support for patients with heart failure or those undergoing high-risk cardiac procedures. Following its acquisition by Abiomed in 2005, the Impella technology became the flagship product line for the company, eventually becoming part of Johnson & Johnson MedTech in 2022. The Impella platform is now a global standard of care for hemodynamic support in cardiogenic shock and protected percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
