Implant Sciences Corporation was a technology company that historically operated in two main segments: security and medical devices. Its medical division focused on the development and manufacture of radioactive brachytherapy seeds, such as the I-Plant iodine-125 seed, used for the treatment of prostate and other cancers. In the security sector, the company became well-known for its trace detection systems for explosives and drugs using ion mobility spectrometry. Following significant financial difficulties and debt obligations, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2016. In early 2017, the company's explosives detection assets were acquired by L3 Technologies for approximately $117.5 million. The medical business was largely phased out or divested prior to the final asset sale, marking the end of the company's independent operations.
