Implex was a medical device company specializing in the development and manufacture of advanced orthopedic implants using its proprietary Hedrocel porous tantalum technology. The company's core innovation, Hedrocel, is a structural biomaterial that mimics the properties of trabecular bone, facilitating rapid bone ingrowth and providing superior mechanical stability. Implex's product portfolio included components for hip and knee arthroplasty, as well as spinal and reconstructive applications. In 2004, the company was acquired by Zimmer Holdings for approximately $108 million, integrating its porous metal technology into Zimmer's global orthopedic offerings. Today, the technology is marketed under the 'Trabecular Metal' brand by Zimmer Biomet and remains a gold standard in porous metal implants.
