Overview

Independence Technology was a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson that developed and marketed the iBOT® Mobility System—a powered wheelchair with advanced mobility features for people with disabilities. The company was established in the late 1990s and operated primarily through the 2000s. Its flagship product, the iBOT®, received FDA clearance in 2003 but faced commercial challenges due to reimbursement issues and high costs. In 2009, Johnson & Johnson discontinued sales of the original iBOT®. The technology was later licensed to Mobius Mobility LLC, which now manufactures an updated version of the device.
