Company intelligence / Profile preview
Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL) is a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India. Established in 1961 with technical assistance from the Soviet Union, IDPL was once the largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in Asia and played a critical role in making India self-sufficient in essential medicines. The company specialized in the production of bulk drugs (APIs) and formulations, particularly antibiotics, vitamins, and surgical instruments. However, following decades of financial losses and operational challenges, the Government of India approved the closure of IDPL in 2016. While the company is currently in the process of winding up and liquidating its assets, it remains a landmark entity in the history of the Indian healthcare industry.
