Indosuez Ventures

Indosuez Ventures was a pioneering venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California, that served as the investment arm of the French bank Banque Indosuez. Established in the early 1980s, the firm played a critical role in the development of the biotechnology industry by providing early-stage funding to high-science startups. It is most famous for being the founding investor in Gilead Sciences, providing the seed capital in 1987 that allowed the company to begin its work in antiviral therapies. Beyond Gilead, the firm maintained a diverse portfolio across life sciences, medical devices, and information technology. Following the acquisition of its parent bank by Crédit Agricole in 1996, the firm's leadership eventually spun out to form CMEA Ventures. Indosuez Ventures is recognized as a key historical entity that helped bridge the gap between academic research and commercial pharmaceutical development.
