Industria Farmaceutica Serono S.p.A. was the Italian operating and manufacturing subsidiary of Serono S.A., a leading global biotechnology company. Originally established in Rome in 1906 as Istituto Farmacologico Serono, the company focused on developing and manufacturing biopharmaceuticals for reproductive health, multiple sclerosis, and growth disorders. Its manufacturing facility in Bari, Italy, was a critical hub for producing major recombinant therapies, including Rebif (interferon beta-1a) and Gonal-f (follitropin alfa). Following the acquisition of Serono S.A. by Merck KGaA in 2006, Industria Farmaceutica Serono was merged with Merck Pharma S.p.A. in November 2007 to form Merck Serono S.p.A.
