Institute for Drug Research

The Institute for Drug Research (IDR), historically known as Gyógyszerkutató Intézet (GYKI), was a prominent pharmaceutical research and development center based in Budapest, Hungary. Founded in 1950 as a state-owned institution, it served as the central R&D hub for the Hungarian pharmaceutical industry, specializing in drug discovery for central nervous system and cardiovascular disorders. The institute was privatized in the late 1990s and acquired by IVAX Corporation in 1999, subsequently becoming part of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries following Teva's acquisition of IVAX in 2006. IDR is most notable for the discovery of talampanel, a first-in-class AMPA receptor antagonist, and for maintaining a significant library of proprietary compounds and microorganisms that continue to support global pharmaceutical development.
