Instituto Butantan de Medicina Preventiva

Instituto Butantan is a premier Brazilian scientific institution and one of the world's largest producers of immunobiologicals, based in São Paulo. Affiliated with the São Paulo State Secretariat of Health, it supplies the vast majority of vaccines and antitoxins used in Brazil's national immunization programs. The institute is globally renowned for its expertise in toxinology, maintaining extensive collections of venomous animals and producing life-saving antivenoms for snake, spider, and scorpion bites. In recent years, Butantan has played a critical role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic through its partnership with Sinovac to produce CoronaVac and the development of its proprietary vaccine candidate, ButanVac. Its activities span the entire value chain from basic scientific research and clinical trials to large-scale industrial manufacturing and public health education.
