Intercell was a prominent Austrian biotechnology company focused on the development of novel vaccines for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. The company achieved significant commercial success with the development of IXIARO, a vaccine against Japanese Encephalitis, which received regulatory approval from the FDA and EMA. Intercell utilized its proprietary Antigen Identification Program (AIP) and vaccine adjuvant technologies, such as IC31, to build a diverse clinical pipeline targeting pathogens like Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Clostridium difficile. In 2013, Intercell merged with the French biotech company Vivalis to form Valneva SE, which continues to advance many of Intercell's original programs, including its high-profile Lyme disease vaccine candidate.
