Intercept Pharmaceuticals is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of novel therapeutics to treat progressive non-viral liver diseases. The company's lead product, Ocaliva (obeticholic acid), is a potent farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist approved for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in combination with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) or as monotherapy. While Intercept was a pioneer in the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) space, it discontinued its NASH program following a second Complete Response Letter from the FDA in 2023. In November 2023, the company was acquired by the Italian pharmaceutical group Alfasigma, transitioning from a public entity to a private subsidiary.
