Intermedics

Intermedics was a prominent medical technology company specializing in the design and manufacture of cardiac pacemakers and orthopedic implants. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Angleton, Texas, the company became a leader in the cardiac rhythm management market with its innovative implantable pulse generators. Its orthopedic division also gained significant market share through the development of prosthetic hip and knee systems. In 1999, Intermedics was acquired by the Swiss industrial group Sulzer AG for approximately $800 million to bolster its Sulzer Medica division. Following a series of corporate restructurings and the spin-off of Sulzer Medica as Centerpulse, the business was eventually acquired by Zimmer Holdings in 2003. Today, the technological legacy of Intermedics is integrated into the global operations of Zimmer Biomet.
