Interpharm Laboratories

Interpharm Laboratories was a pioneering Israeli biotechnology company and a key subsidiary of the Serono Group (Ares-Serono). Founded in 1978, the company leveraged research from the Weizmann Institute of Science to develop advanced mammalian cell culture technologies for the production of therapeutic proteins. It is most famous for the development and large-scale manufacturing of Rebif (interferon beta-1a), which became a blockbuster treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. At its peak, Interpharm was a cornerstone of the Israeli life sciences sector, operating sophisticated R&D and GMP manufacturing facilities in Ness Ziona. Following strategic shifts within Serono and its subsequent acquisition by Merck KGaA, Interpharm's operations were phased out in 2004.
