Inverness Medical Technology

Inverness Medical Technology was a U.S. healthcare diagnostics and medical technology company focused primarily on products for diabetes self-management, especially blood glucose monitoring and related consumer diagnostic devices. The company evolved from SelfCare and adopted the Inverness Medical Technology name in 2000. In November 2001, Johnson & Johnson acquired Inverness Medical Technology's diabetes care products business in a transaction valued at approximately $1.3 billion, while certain other businesses were split off into a separate public company, Inverness Medical Innovations. As a result, Inverness Medical Technology no longer operates as an independent active company. The business is best understood as a historical predecessor within the diagnostics lineage that later included Inverness Medical Innovations and, subsequently, Alere.
