Iolab Pharmaceuticals was a prominent ophthalmic healthcare company that specialized in the development and manufacture of intraocular lenses and ophthalmic pharmaceutical products. Originally established as an independent company in 1976, it was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1980 and became a key player in the cataract surgery market. The company's portfolio featured a range of surgical devices and topical medications, including the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug Ocufen. In 1995, Johnson & Johnson divested the company's assets to focus on other core areas. The pharmaceutical division was sold to Bausch + Lomb, while the intraocular lens business was acquired by Chiron Corporation. This divestiture marked the end of Iolab as a unified entity under the Johnson & Johnson umbrella.
