Ion Health Holdings

Ion Health Holdings, Inc. was a Medicaid managed care organization (HMO) based in Erie, Pennsylvania. Founded by entrepreneur Anthony Horbal, the company was licensed in 2003 and quickly became a significant player in the Pennsylvania Medicaid market, enrolling over 20,000 members. In 2004, it received a $200 million private equity investment from J.W. Childs Associates to support its expansion. The company was known for its focus on preventive health initiatives, such as the "Sleep Safe" program for expectant mothers. In early 2006, the company transitioned its membership to other managed care organizations, primarily AmeriHealth Mercy (now AmeriHealth Caritas), as part of a strategic exit from the Pennsylvania Medicaid market.
