Company intelligence / Profile preview
Ionian Technologies was a biotechnology company that pioneered the development of rapid, isothermal nucleic acid amplification for molecular diagnostics. The company's signature technology, the Nicking Enzyme Amplification Reaction (NEAR), allows for the highly sensitive detection of DNA and RNA targets in minutes, bypassing the need for the complex thermal cycling required by traditional PCR. This platform was specifically designed to enable laboratory-quality molecular testing in point-of-care settings. In July 2010, Ionian was acquired by Alere (now part of Abbott) for approximately $43 million. Today, the NEAR technology serves as the core engine for the Abbott ID NOW™ platform, which provides rapid testing for infectious diseases such as Influenza, Strep A, and COVID-19.
