Ixsys

Ixsys was a San Diego-based biotechnology company that specialized in the discovery and optimization of humanized monoclonal antibodies through directed evolution. The company utilized a proprietary platform involving combinatorial libraries and high-throughput screening to enhance the affinity and therapeutic potential of proteins. Its lead product candidate, Vitaxin, was a monoclonal antibody targeting the alpha-v-beta-3 integrin, which was developed to inhibit angiogenesis in solid tumors. Ixsys established strategic partnerships with major industry players, including MedImmune and SmithKline Beecham, to advance its pipeline. In January 2001, the company was acquired by Applied Molecular Evolution (AME) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $42 million. AME was subsequently acquired by Eli Lilly in 2004, integrating Ixsys's technology and assets into Lilly's biologics portfolio.
