J.R. Geigy

J.R. Geigy was a pioneering Swiss chemical and pharmaceutical company founded in 1758 in Basel. The firm initially specialized in chemicals and dyes before transitioning into a global pharmaceutical powerhouse in the 20th century. It is historically significant for developing major drugs such as the antidepressant Tofranil, the anticonvulsant Tegretol, and the insecticide DDT, for which researcher Paul Müller won a Nobel Prize. In 1970, J.R. Geigy merged with Ciba to form Ciba-Geigy, which later merged with Sandoz in 1996 to create Novartis. Today, the legacy of Geigy remains a foundational component of Novartis's heritage and the Swiss life sciences industry.
