Jerini Ophthalmic

Jerini Ophthalmic was a U.S.-based ophthalmology biotechnology subsidiary of Jerini AG focused on developing novel therapeutics and sustained-release formulations for eye diseases. The company was created to advance ophthalmic programs derived from Jerini's broader discovery capabilities, including JSM 6427, an intravitreally delivered small-molecule antagonist of integrin alpha-5 beta-1 receptor for neovascular age-related macular degeneration. Jerini Ophthalmic also pursued extended-release approaches for chronic ocular diseases through an external formulation partnership. The business appears to have remained an early-stage development organization and did not emerge as an independent commercial company after Jerini AG was acquired by Shire in 2008. It is best understood as a historical ophthalmology subsidiary rather than an active standalone biotech today.
