Katairo

Katairo is a private German biopharmaceutical company developing therapies for retinal degenerative eye diseases. Its lead and apparently sole core program is Remofuscin, a small-molecule therapy based on soraprazan that is designed to remove lipofuscin from retinal pigment epithelium cells. The company is focused on Stargardt disease and dry age-related macular degeneration, with its Stargardt program having advanced into Phase 2 clinical testing and the dry AMD program described by the company as entering Phase 2 while additional funding is being sought for a first clinical study in that indication. Katairo was founded in 2011 as a spinout related to discoveries at the University of Tübingen and has licensed relevant IP and data from Takeda. The company positions itself as developing disease-modifying ophthalmology therapeutics for seriously disabling back-of-the-eye indications.
