Knoll Pharmaceuticals

Knoll Pharmaceuticals was a historical pharmaceutical company founded in Germany in 1886 and later operated as BASF's pharmaceutical business, including a major U.S. operating unit known as Knoll Pharmaceutical Company. The company developed and marketed prescription medicines in metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, pain, endocrinology, immunology, and related areas, with notable products including Synthroid, Meridia/Reductil, Rythmol/Rytmonorm, Isoptin, and Dilaudid. It also had research and development capabilities, including late-stage assets and monoclonal antibody technologies referenced at the time of its sale. BASF agreed to sell the business to Abbott in December 2000, and Abbott completed the acquisition on March 2, 2001 for $6.9 billion in cash. Knoll no longer operates as an independent active company.
