Laboratórios Roussel

Laboratórios Roussel was the Brazilian subsidiary of the prominent French pharmaceutical company Roussel Uclaf, which played a significant role in the global healthcare industry during the 20th century. The company was a pioneer in the field of steroid chemistry, leading to the development of essential hormonal therapies and anti-inflammatory corticosteroids. It gained international recognition for the creation of mifepristone (RU-486), the first progesterone receptor antagonist used for medical termination of pregnancy. Additionally, the company was a leader in the antibiotic market, developing widely used cephalosporins such as cefotaxime. Following a series of mergers, Laboratórios Roussel was integrated into Hoechst Marion Roussel and eventually became part of Sanofi. Today, its legacy is preserved within Sanofi's extensive pharmaceutical operations in Brazil and worldwide.
