Laboratoires Specia

Laboratoires Specia, officially known as Société Parisienne d'Expansion Chimique, was a pioneering French pharmaceutical company that served as the primary medical specialty arm of Rhône-Poulenc. The company is most famous for its revolutionary impact on psychiatry through the development of chlorpromazine, marketed as Largactil, which was the first effective antipsychotic medication. This discovery in the early 1950s is credited with initiating the psychopharmacological revolution and fundamentally changing the treatment of schizophrenia. In addition to its work in mental health, Specia developed several essential anti-infective agents, including the antibiotic spiramycin (Rovamycine) and the antiparasitic metronidazole (Flagyl). These products became global standards of care and remain on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Following a series of major pharmaceutical mergers involving Rhône-Poulenc and Aventis, Specia's operations and product portfolio were eventually integrated into Sanofi.
