Laboratorios Knoll

Knoll was a prominent German pharmaceutical company that served as the healthcare division of BASF, known as BASF Pharma. The company is most famous for its role in the early development of the blockbuster drug Humira (adalimumab), a monoclonal antibody that revolutionized the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. In 2001, Abbott Laboratories acquired Knoll for approximately $6.9 billion, primarily to secure the rights to Humira and expand its global pharmaceutical footprint. Beyond immunology, Knoll's portfolio included established products such as the thyroid medication Synthroid, the calcium channel blocker Isoptin, and the anti-obesity drug Meridia. Following the acquisition, Knoll's operations were integrated into Abbott, and its legacy assets eventually transitioned to AbbVie after its spin-off in 2013. The company maintained a significant presence in Latin America through its subsidiary, Laboratorios Knoll.
