Company intelligence / Profile preview
Lancashire Tar Distillers was a prominent British industrial chemical company specializing in the distillation of coal tar and the production of refined chemical derivatives. Founded in 1930 through the consolidation of several regional distillers, the company operated a major refinery in Cadishead, Manchester, processing byproducts from the coal gas and steel industries. Its product portfolio included essential chemical precursors such as phenols, cresols, naphthalene, and anthracene, which were foundational to the manufacture of resins, dyes, and early synthetic pharmaceuticals. While primarily an industrial entity, the company's high-purity chemical fractions served as critical raw materials for the mid-20th-century healthcare and antiseptic supply chains. The company was eventually absorbed into the Lanstar group before its primary distilling operations were phased out.
