Life Science Institute, Inc. (LSII) is a healthcare-focused subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, established in 2014 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The company was formed to integrate the group's healthcare businesses and drive innovation in "reparative medicine," primarily through its proprietary Multi-lineage differentiating Stress Enduring (Muse) cell platform. Muse cells are a unique type of endogenous pluripotent stem cell capable of homing to damaged tissues and differentiating into various cell types to promote repair. LSII's lead clinical candidate, CL2020, underwent extensive clinical evaluation for multiple high-unmet-need indications, including acute myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and spinal cord injury. Despite promising early-stage data, Mitsubishi Chemical Group announced in February 2023 that it would discontinue the development of the Muse cell program as part of a broader strategic shift toward specialty materials and a simplified pharmaceutical portfolio.
