Lilly ICOS

Lilly ICOS was a significant joint venture between Eli Lilly and Company and ICOS Corporation, established in 1998 to develop and commercialize the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor tadalafil. Marketed under the brand name Cialis, the drug became a blockbuster success in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, known for its prolonged duration of efficacy. The partnership effectively managed the clinical trials, regulatory approvals, and global marketing strategies that allowed Cialis to compete with established therapies. In 2007, Eli Lilly acquired ICOS Corporation for $2.3 billion, primarily to secure full ownership of Cialis and its future revenue streams. This acquisition led to the dissolution of the joint venture and the integration of its assets into Lilly's portfolio.
