Limerick Neurosciences was a biopharmaceutical company focused on the design and development of peripherally restricted small molecule therapeutics. The company's core technology platform leveraged the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump at the blood-brain barrier to actively exclude drugs from the central nervous system (CNS). By restricting drug activity to the peripheral system, Limerick aimed to improve the safety profile and therapeutic index of compounds that otherwise cause significant CNS-related side effects. The company's lead program, LIM-0708, was developed for the treatment of pain and inflammation. In 2013, Shire acquired Limerick's lead assets and proprietary technology to integrate them into its own research and development pipeline.
