Founded in 1888 by Jacob Baur, the company revolutionized the beverage and healthcare industries by developing commercial-scale gas liquefaction and purification technologies. In the healthcare sector, Liquid Carbonic was a critical supplier of medical-grade gases used for respiratory support, surgical insufflation, and clinical anesthesia. The company operated as the primary subsidiary of CBI Industries until its acquisition by Praxair in 1996 for approximately $2.2 billion. This strategic acquisition allowed Praxair (now Linde) to dominate the global carbon dioxide market and significantly expand its healthcare services division.
