Long Island College Hospital

Long Island College Hospital (LICH) was a historic teaching hospital located in the Cobble Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1858, it was notable for being one of the first medical schools in the United States to be integrated directly within a hospital setting. LICH provided a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including emergency medicine, maternity care, and specialized surgical services, serving the Brooklyn community for over 150 years. Following a period of significant financial distress, the institution was acquired by SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2011. However, continued losses and legal challenges led to its controversial and permanent closure in 2014, with the property subsequently sold for residential redevelopment.
