Lotus Tissue Repair developed the first and only protein replacement therapy for dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB), a severe orphan skin disease caused by mutations in the COL7A1 gene. Their lead candidate was a recombinant form of human collagen type VII intended as an intravenous therapy. The company was acquired by Shire in early 2013 while its lead program was still in preclinical development. No clinical results were reported prior to acquisition[2][5].
