Lumara Health

Lumara Health was best known for Makena® (hydroxyprogesterone caproate injection), the only FDA-approved product indicated to reduce the risk of preterm birth in certain high-risk pregnancies. The company also developed products in maternal health and women's healthcare, including anti-infectives and estrogen therapies. At acquisition, Makena had over $130 million in annual sales with rapid growth. The effectiveness of Makena was based on reducing deliveries before 37 weeks gestation; no controlled trials demonstrated direct clinical benefit such as improved neonatal mortality or morbidity. The company filed patents related to enhancing iron absorption but these were not yet commercialized at the time of acquisition. In November 2014, AMAG Pharmaceuticals acquired Lumara Health for $675 million plus up to $350 million contingent on sales milestones.
